Nasal Prostheses

Silicone Nose Prostheses

Overview

A nasal prosthesis is commonly made for a patient who has undergone a resection / amputation due to cancer. Due to the centralized location of the injury and the high degree of tissue movement in this area, special attention is paid to ensure that the border connections of the prosthesis blend with the surrounding skin.

Process

When possible, a flexible silicone impression is taken of the nose prior to resection / amputation, which is used as a base model. In instances where this is not an option, a model can be sculpted using photographic reference, impressions from a family member, or a custom sculpt can be made. This wax model is positioned on the patient to ensure that anatomical accuracy and symmetry are maintained. A multi-part mold is created from the wax sculpture. Magnets and / or small clips are used to fasten the prosthesis to the implants, allowing for easy placement and removal by the patient.
